I like the point which he talked about individuals would band together in networks. I still remember the first time I wrote a blog about cats. A stranger I never met before read my blog and left a comment about how much she liked the article. Internet facilitate people to communicate easily even thought they do not know each others. I am still keeping in touch with that girl, and shared our experiences with our cats. I appreciate that social media builds a way to the society. Social media shortens the distance of the world.
Some people might argue that they did not see any influence made by social media. They do not understand why they had to pay attention and spend money on these social media methods. However, “Click Here to Save Darfur” is a successful example to show how effective social media is. A student in Sudan used Facebook to decry the human rights catastrophe in a public bog. He was not sure if it would encourage people to save Darfur. FaceBook is not only using to support online courses, but it brings a great influence in the real world. The student asserted, “Facebook is the platform that allows us to make social change and realistic things happen.” According to this article, it mentioned that the effectiveness of Web organizing could be also measured in dollars. For instance, in 2006, the online donation is near to 6.9 billion from a year earlier. Obviously, it is easy to see that social media does have a great influences on our society.

For example, some CEOs are not going to allow their minors to blog because they think their employees so wild that the CEOs cannot control what their employee will say. And also, they think it might be too risky to allow their colleagues to write blog posts. That is really hard to believe. How can a CEO hire someone that he doesn’t really trust? Some CEOs also think that they cannot see any return on investment. The author asserts that corporate blogging is a very useful part of their SEO strategy. It also takes part in conversations with your customers. I think these CEOs need to think more. This week, I read an article, called “Improve Client Relationships Through Social Media.” Dan Backus is a co-founder of The Port Network. He gives four tips for building the power of social media to support your company’s communication with your customers. The four tips are to know your audience, align organizational objectives with social media tools, establish procedures, and identify resources and bring everyone on the same page. Most of them we have heard it many times. But, for the establishing procedures, I did not hear it often. I agree with him. I think he mentions a really good point that I had been ignored it for long time. Since companies need to have a higher level of trust in their publics, only social media can do it instead of other communication tools. In addition, he also assets that it is important to retain some oversight to ensure communications remain appropriate and focus on your company’s goals. He suggests that it could begin by identifying forum moderators and developing rules for posting.
I found an article, called “Do PR people read enough?” This article discussed if PR people read enough. I think most people do not like to read much. They are trying to find key words and considering it as the answer. They do not really care how the quality of writing it is. Most people think it save a lot of time. In this article, the author believed a good PR person is a news junkie, but people do not read that much. I think that is a problem. Many search engine website, for example Google, can only give you about 50% of the information. No one can write a good pitch letter by only using only 50% information. Many people wonder if people are not reading the news, then people can not write good news. Many people assert that reading and writing are always together. No one can write well without reading. Even though Google might save you time, you might miss some kinds of important information too.
This week I read “Question for PR students: to blog, or not blog.” Blogging is getting popular now. But, many people like me; they only read blogs instead of writing a blog. For example, I always read blogs but I do not really use blog often. However, I do think that it is important to use blogs for PR people. PR people must be familiar with every type of social media so that they can persuade their clients more effectively. In addition, writing a blog might not be easy but it shows how creative you are. In the article, Stacy Spaulding, a journalism professor, gave a good example to encourage PR students to use blogs. She asserted, “not only does it tell an editor that student is thinking about his work creatively, but it also demonstrates that he’ll be able to contribute to the expanding multimedia demands newspapers are making on photographers and reporters.” I agree with her. In addition, my teacher said if you wanted to improve your writing, you have to write more. If you want to write more, you must put a lot of blood on it, or people are not going to read your things.
Recently, I read an article, called “Teachers Should Blog, Tweet and Flirt Online Like the Rest of Us.” It argued if teachers could not post their profiles on social networking or online dating sites. It reminded me of news happened in few years ago. This news is about a junior school teacher who felled in love with her student. In the beginning, they did not recognize each other. She did not notice this student until she met him from a social networking website. This news was so popular at that time because that many people thought it was not allowed. After that, many schools started to tell students not going to social networking and teachers are not allowed to post their personal profiles on social networking webside. But, the author of this article asserted that teachers should try social networking services, such as having a blog, texting message with their won families and friends. It helps teachers understand what the world their students live and easy to communicate with their students. I agree with her. Instead, many students do not want to be told what should do or not do. If we can educate our students or children the right concept, these social networking services might be a tool to facilitate their school life or others.
This week, I read an article from Kille’s blog, which is called “Marketing Lessons from School Lunch.” Paul William, who has worked for a food service company, shared his experience. His job is to manage the school district’s food program. I like a interesting simple arithmetic equation that he shared in the article, which is A-P=S. The A stands for audience, the P means problem, and the S is solution or success. So, the audience minus the problem, and then the result equals solution and success. Audience is always the key to open a door to success. If you do not understand your audiences, then everything is not going to work even though you have a perfect product or idea. In addition, he asserted that it was a tight communication link among these groups. If one of them were not happy, news spreads to the rest quickly. It is a really challenge for marketers to satisfy each group’s needs. I think it is same for PR people. If PR people failed to understand their clients, then it means nothing.
In Why your clients need media training, the author shared her experiences. She said that a PR person arranged an interview with his client, who was the head of product marketing. The PR person tried to ask some questions regarding his company, but the his client did not know how to answer these questions. I agree what the author said in the article, “Media training is important because it teaches spokespeople about how press works and what a feature actually is.” It is a real situation that might still happened in somewhere else. Good media training might facilitate the communication for both company and social media.
